Spot Tracer Handheld EMSS Beacon provides truly global coverage and two-way personal tracking to its users. It provides position location information (PLI) determined by a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver via Iridium’s short burst data (SBD) service. Trace Systems offers two different versions – beacon with external antennas and beacon with internal antennas. Both versions include a micro USB port for charging, firmware update and changing parameter settings. The beacon with internal antennas also includes a Bluetooth, allowing communications with a smart phone using industry standard synchronous serial port (SSP) protocol. The beacon’ s ultra-low power consumption electronics draw less than 35µA during sleep.

Data is packaged in either standard or 256-bit advanced encryption standard formats and can sent in encrypted PECOS formats to include Brevity codes.

The pocket-sized 9602-LP Spot Tracer can discretely deliver and receive truly global, “pole-to-pole” position location information (PLI) from a variety of air, sea and ground platforms. The PLI is shared via an internal micro-controller/Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver over the Iridium low-Earth orbit satellite network. The device can send either a standard or a 256-bit advanced encryption standard (AES) GPS report to its users at pre-programmed intervals ranging from four seconds to seven days.

The self-contained, concealable unit measures 2.7” x 2.2” x 0.9”, weighs less than five ounces and can be attached to high value, untethered or non-powered assets such as shipping containers, barges, railcars, trailers, buoys or even to a person. It is also used by the military to track environmentally demanding platforms including helicopters, fixed-wing, aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, rockets, high altitude balloons, ships, speed-boats, ground vehicles and dismounted and air-deployed remote sensors.

The Spot Tracer is designed with ultra-low power consumption electronics. At stand-by mode, the unit draws less than 65μA in the range of 3.5VDC to 5.5VDC input. By adjusting reporting frequencies, the user can extend the life of the 2A-Hr Li-battery (the size of an AA Alkaline battery). Battery life can be further extended by using a built-in motion sensor to reduce reporting frequency when a platform is not in motion.

The Spot Tracer can deliver its position to other friendly network operation centers or platforms and receive PLI from them. Reporting intervals can be changed remotely while the unit is in the field. It includes a serial port that can communicate with an external sensor or data terminal equipment (DTE) such as a personal digital assistance, as well as seven discrete input/outputs for external sensor interfaces.

The Spot Tracer has a guarded emergency switch to alert the recipient of an emergency situation and indicate proper operation of the tracker. It has five LEDs providing the status of power input, GPS fix, Iridium connection, short burst data transmission and emergency alerts. Developed and networked by Iridium and distributed by Trace Systems, the Spot Tracer provides situational awareness that is tailorable to dynamic operational needs.
